The Pros and Cons of Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn

Jungfraujoch Pro

  • Ride a historic train to Europe’s highest station: Jungfraujoch boasts the highest train station in Europe. Its railway, built between 1896 and 1912 using manual labor, such as pickaxes and shovels, is a testament to the determination and hard work of the builders, adding historical significance to the site.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: Jungfraujoch is located within the Jungfrau-Aletsch Region, an area that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. This distinction makes it an appealing destination for those seeking to visit as many UNESCO sites as possible.
  • Snow activities and glacier walks year-round: Visitors to Jungfraujoch can enjoy hiking, skiing, and snow tubing even during the summer months. This unique opportunity to play in the snow and explore glaciers is a major highlight for those who do not typically experience snow in their home countries.
  • Diverse Attractions and Dining Options: Jungfraujoch offers a wide range of activities, exhibitions, and dining choices that cater to diverse interests. From the Ice Palace and Alpine Sensation to the Sphinx Observatory and Lindth Experience, there’s something for everyone. Especially the variety of snow activities and the enchanting Ice Palace, making it a more appealing and engaging destination for families traveling with children.

Jungfraujoch Con

  • Expensive Experience: Visiting Jungfraujoch can be quite costly, with prices nearly double those of Schilthorn. Although there are more activities available, spending around CHF 200 may not be appealing to everyone.
  • Touristy and Crowded Atmosphere: Jungfraujoch attracts visitors from not only nearby locations like Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen but also from Lucerne and Zurich. Its popularity can lead to a crowded experience, particularly during summer.
  • Advance Ticket Booking Required: Due to its popularity, it’s advisable to book tickets 1 to 2 days in advance to secure a spot on the first train of the day. Be mindful of the weather forecast when reserving tickets, as it can change quickly.

The Great Aletsch Glacier Seen From Valai

Schilthorn Pro

  • Thrilling Cable Car Ride: Schilthorn is reached via an exciting series of cable cars, offering a different experience than the long tunnel to Jungfraujoch.
  • Brunch at Piz Gloria: Enjoy a 45-minute revolving restaurant experience, savoring delicious food while admiring over 200 mountain peaks passing by your window.
  • Superior Views: Schilthorn offers breathtaking 360° Alpine views and a stunning perspective of Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger. From the Jungfraujoch, you’ll see the amazing Aletsch Glacier, which is beautiful, but not as breathtaking as the view you get from the Schilthorn.
  • More Affordable: Schilthorn tickets are roughly half the price of those for Jungfraujoch.

Schilthorn Con

  • Lower chance of seeing snow. There is not much snow left on the Schilthorn in mid to late summer. If you want to walk on the snow, the Jungfraujoch is the clear winner.
  • For visitors who aren’t fans of James Bond or have little interest in the movie-themed attractions, Schilthorn’s Bond World and Piz Gloria may be less appealing. In contrast, Jungfraujoch offers a broader range of experiences unrelated to popular culture.
  • During the off-season or poor weather conditions, some outdoor activities and attractions at Schilthorn, such as hiking trails, may be inaccessible or closed. Jungfraujoch, on the other hand, offers a variety of indoor attractions, making it a more suitable option for year-round visits.

Jungfraujoch Or Schilthorn: The Final Decision

Deciding between Jungfraujoch vs. Schilthorn can be challenging, as both offer amazing experiences with unique features.

Schilthorn’s journey is not only faster but also more scenic since you travel by cable car instead of through a train tunnel. Additionally, it is significantly more affordable and tends to be less crowded, providing breathtaking views of the Alps.

On the other hand, Jungfraujoch offers the unparalleled experience of seeing the glacier, playing in the snow, hiking to a mountain hut, and exploring ice sculptures and a cave. However, the higher costs, larger crowds, and longer travel time can make it a less appealing choice for some.
