In this article, we will give you 5 reasons to visit Schynige Platte and the different things to do there.
Located in the heart of the Jungfrau region, Schynige Platte is one of the most beautiful excursions to see in the Interlaken area. It’s a place that offers plenty to do for everyone visiting – from families with little kids to experienced adults.
In addition to its immense beauty, you reach Schynige Platte in a nostalgic cog railway – making it a double hitter. As soon as you step into the open coaches you are carried back to the Belle Époche. Making the experience even more special as the train climbs uphill and the view of the mountains becomes breathtaking.
You can consider Schynige Platte a bit of a hidden gem since it’s not as widely known by international tourists as for example the Jungfraujoch. However, this mountain excursion is not to be missed.
5 Reasons why to visit Schynige Platte and things to do
1. The Historic Railway
Schynige Platte is a plateau situated near Interlaken. Proudly calling itself “Top of Swiss Tradition,” the mountain ridge sits at a height of 1967m.
The ride to Schynige Platte is an attraction in itself. There is a historic railway station leading from Wilderswil near Interlaken to Schynige Platte. This railway first opened in 1893 and has since been operating for over 125 years.
In 1914, the traditional steam locomotives were replaced by electric trains. The latest trains that operate on this line today are all more than a century old. The vintage aspect of these trains is witnessed when you step into a wooden carriage in one of them. It takes you back to the beautiful Belle Époque era.
There aren’t many other places in the country that still use this train mechanism, which adds to the uniqueness and charm of the experience here. The train takes you up the mountain in 50 minutes. Since the train ascends gradually, you are able to take in the spectacular scenery during the journey, serving as a prelude to what’s about to come.
Around 4 times a year, you can also catch a ride to Schynige Platte on an authentic steam train that still employs the original locomotive that was built in 1894.
2. The Spectacular Scenery
As is a common theme with the towns in the Jungfrau region, Schynige Platte does not compromise on scenery. The minute you reach there, you are treated to magnificent landscapes and panoramic views that are unbeatable.
You can easily access the nearest summit residing at 2067m and take a look at Interlaken and the endless mountain peaks of the Jungfrau region.
Even if you are not a hiking enthusiast, taking a short walk through the Botanical Alpine Garden is a must.
The Botanical Garden is located right above the railway station. As you walk along it, you will pass giant wooden picture frames that overlook the snow-capped peaks of the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The locals call it the “Nature Cinema.” Truly, Schynige Platte’s beauty stays true to its name.
3. The Botanical Alpine Garden
As mentioned earlier, the Botanical Alpine Garden is not to be missed. The garden is open from 8:30 am to 6 pm from the end of May till mid-October and showcases more than 600 plants in their natural habitat.
Admission to this beautiful space is included in the price of your train ticket. With prior notice, you have the option to book a guided tour of the garden. The staff will provide you with plenty of information on the alpine flowers and their environment.
We recommend going here between the months of June and August since that’s when the flowers are blooming at their most.
4. Alphorn Sound on the Schynige Platte
The Alphorn is a musical instrument that is typical to the Swiss Alps. It’s often played during traditional celebrations in Switzerland, but can also be found in Austria, the Bavaria region in Germany, and a few more places located in the Alps.
The alpine horn is a long wooden horn that can be as long as 4m long. While quite impressive and a unique insight into Swiss culture, you will likely not encounter someone playing it during your trip to Switzerland. That is, until you reach Schynige Platte.
Here, they have alphorn players that give daily performances during the summer months. Depending on the favorability of weather, the performances are either held indoors or outdoors from 11 am to 2 pm.
If you don’t want to miss the alphorn performance, it’s best to visit the Alpine Garden first, then go to the hotel for the performance. You can also have lunch at the restaurant and then start the Panorama Trail from there.

While at the Schynige Platte there is no shortage of hiking trails, the Panorama Trail has some of the nicest views, especially in the area spanning between Daube viewpoint and Oberberghorn.
